27 Aug

BLT 2/26 disembarked at DaNang and 2dBattalion, 26th Marines proceeded to its assigned TAOR.

28 Aug

2dBn 26th Marines relieved 3dBn 3d Marines and became OPCON to the 3dMarine Regiment at 1500.

29 Aug

290945H A sniper fired 12 rds from vic [AT968698] at H Co. position in vic [AT958698].  The fire was returned.

 

H Co. responding to a request received from 3/1 established a blocking force from [AT963690] to [AT968698] with two plts.  The request was in response to 3/1 being in contact with VC in vic [AT970671].  Significant incidents are noted below.
-- 291225H  A sniper appeared in vic [AT968692] and fired 1 rd, LVTH returned 3 rds 50 cal and H Co. fired 6 rds of S/A.  Sniper was silenced.
-- 291300H  H Co. patrol located an earthen jar buried in the ground vic [AT967693].  The jar was blown with demo and search revealed that it contained 12 x M-79 rds, 1 hard core uniform jacket, 1/4 mile of comm wire, a diary, log book and propaganda material.  The M-79 rds were destroyed and the other material retained for evaluation.

H Co. remained the Regimental Reserve Company and established local patrols and security in assigned sector.

31 Aug

H Co. conducted a search and clear operation in the vic [AT9573].  One incident is noted below.
-- 311230H  H Co. patrol located a cave in vic [AT9522737].  The entrance was approx 2-1/2 ft round and 4-5 ft deep.  The entrance was camouflaged with bamboo stakes and comm wire.  Near the cave was found a piece of paper with possibly Chinese or Japanese writing on it.  The paper was retained for evaluation with the cave destroyed.

H Co. conducted a Company(-)(Rein) search and clear operation in the vicinity of LA CHAU(3) and (5) [AT957683] to [AT962660].  Significant incidents are noted below.
-- 011000H  H Co. patrol tripped a chi-com type mine (exact type unknown) in vic [AT956677].  2 US WIA (PFC Jack Roe & ? ) required med evac.
-- 011030H  H Co. patrol discovered in a house vic [AT964668], VC posters.  A tunnel was also found leading from the house.  The house and tunnel were destroyed.
-- 011045H  H Co. patrol located in vic [AT964669] two punji pits.  One pit was 2ft x 2ft x 5ft with the second pit 2ft x 2ft x 4ft.  Both pits were destroyed with a secondary explosion resulting from the first pit.
-- 011137H  H Co. patrol located 3 punji pits in vic [AT956677].  Two pits were 2ft x 2ft x 2ft, with the third 2ft x 2ft x 4ft.  The pits were camouflaged with bamboo stakes in the bottom.  The pits were destroyed.

-- 031700H  Not H Co., but certainly a memory of all that were present.
H&S Co. wiremen traveling east in a mighty mite and trailer from District HQ at HIEU DUC detonated a mine in vic [AT938688].  The mighty mite was completely destroyed and the trailer badly damaged by a suspected electrically detonated charge buried in the road.  The mine was completely disintegrated and could not be identified.  3 US KIA, 5 US WIA one DOW later (Total 4 KIA and 4 WIA).  Complete report to follow.

H Co. conducted a company(-)(Rein) search and clear operation in the vic of BO BAN(2) and (1), DUONG LAM(1) and (3) [AT9568],[AT9569],[AT9669],and [AT9668].  Significant incidents are noted below.
-- 040745H  H Co. apprehended 2 VCS who had false looking ID cards in vic [AT951684].  Both VCS sent to ITT for interrogation.
-- 040900H  H Co. observed seven boats moving rapidly across Song Yen River in vic [AT964692].  Patrol dispatched to area had negative results upon search.
Summary of events of the operation are listed below:
-- 040900H  [AT954683] 1 cave blown.
-- 040915H  [AT954683] Papers found hidden in rice jug.  Hand written turned over to S-2.
-- 041030H  [AT960686] 2 55gal. drums of gasoline discovered and dumped.
-- 041145H  [AT961688] found new signs for marking mined trail.  Consisted of strips of bamboo tied to branch of tree.  3 mines blown.  6 punji type holes discovered and blown; 3 holes camouflaged, 3 not covered.  2 camouflaged holes produced secondary explosions.  New type mine discovered - consisted of 2 strips of bamboo under a punji cover, connected by thin wire.  Both sections 15" - 18" long.  Filled with some type explosive.  Appeared to be friction type mine.
-- 041300H  [AT961687] 1 metal toothed trap discovered and thrown into river.
-- Occurrence in BO BAN(2):  Blocking force provided medical attention for approx. 25 patients.  After this occurred, the hamlet chief showed the plt patrol leader pits and possible hiding places of mines and booby traps in these positions on an irregular basis, but no set pattern.

H Co. conducted a company size search and clear operation in the semi-cleared areas of DONG LAM(3) [AT9569] and BO BAN(1) [AT9560] and BO BAN(2) [AT9569].  Significant events are noted below.
-- 081400H  H Co. patrol found a punji pit in vic [AT954686] and located a cave in vic [AT954683].  The punji pit was 2' x 3' x 8'.  Both were destroyed with demo with no secondary explosions.
-- 081448H  H Co. located an old uncovered punji pit, 2' x 2' x __ on side of trail in vic [AT954682].  2 men passed the side of pit with no incident, the third man detonated a mine of an unknown type.  Results 1 US KIA (PFC Michael Gordon Tandy), 1 US WIA, med evac requested.

H Co. continued to provide security for Rough Rider North under the Operational Control of 4th Marines.

H Co. continued to provide security for Rough Rider North between DaNang and DongHa under OPCON of 4th Marines.

H Co. provided security for Rough Rider North between DongHa and DaNang, returning to DaNang 211630H.

H Co. maintained a Battalion reserve, furnishing one plt(rein) for security on Rough Rider North from DaNang to PhuBai.  Security departed NamO Bridge 251420H: secured PhuBai 251710H; and returned to DaNang 251930H.

H Co. continued to provide security for the Bn CP and TUY LOAN Bridges [AT945707] and [AT943709].  Significant incidents are noted below.
-- 261410H  H Co. bridge security [AT945707] apprehended one VCS with wound in stomach.  VCS possibly sniper in G Co. contact of 261307H at [AT899702].  VCS med evaced.
-- 262030H  H Co. bridge security [AT942707] received 5 grenades and S/A fire from [AT942706].  S/A fire returned with negative results.

27 Sep

-- 270650H   Co. patrol detonated mine believed to be M-26 under rock, resulting in one USMC WIA [AT893700].  MEDEVAC WIA and area search with negative result.

H Co. continued to provide the reaction force for the battalion and security for the TUY LOAN Bridge [AT945707].  The Company also provided a blocking force for the search and clear conducted by Company F.  One significant incident is noted below.
-- 290620H  H Co. platoon spotted two VC in boat [AT960700].  Delivered S/A fire, VC returned fire.  One rifle grenade fired, one VC knocked from boat.  Body appeared to sink to river bottom.  Other VC landed boat and fled southward.

Command Group BRAVO departed to assume responsibility for 1/3 TAOR.
-- H Co. departed for 1/3 sector OPCON Command Group BRAVO.
Essentially, 2/26 split its Command Group to become two battalions.  We moved with the BRAVO group from TUY LOAN to the North Side of DA NANG. taking over that sector and relieving the 1stBn 3dMarines on LeMY, NamO Bridge, etc.

Command Group BRAVO with Company H assumed OPCON of 1/3 sector as Prov. Bn. 3d Marines.  There were no contacts or significant incidents.

H CO. conducted search and clear operations commencing at 0900 with a helicopter lift into the village of HOA LOC [AT8883].  CAC unit's provided blocking force's on the North side of the village and on the South side of the SONG CA DE.  Significant incident's are noted below.
-- 040935H  H Co. search and clear element detonated mine believed to be ChiCom grenade [AT877733] resulting in one USMC WIA: WIA MED EVAC.
-- 041145H  H Co. sweep element discovered 17 freshly constructed punji pits [AT881831] to [AT882832]; pits blown with C-4.
-- 041510H  H Co. sweep element detonated M-26 grenade mine [AT894830] resulting in two ARVN WIA and one USN WIA; WIA MED EVAC.

H Co. conducted search and clear operations North of grid line 81 to the SONG CA DE between grid line 87 and 92, along Prov. Route #1 from THON PHUOC DONG [AT8776] to DEO ONG GAM [AT8977].  Significant incidents are noted below.

-- 061435H  H Co. patrol located 60mm mortar round [AT879768]; blown in place with C-4.

Command Group BRAVO chopped Prov.Bn; now OPCON 2/26
At this point, the BRAVO Group and Company H were re-united with 2/26.  I believe we stayed in place, and that the Battalion actually moved forward to join us on the Northern perimeter for a few days before we all moved North to PHU BAI-- but further checks are needed.  The Command Chronology appears to be missing data for the period 09-18 October66.
